Digestive System
What it is the Digestive System?
The digestive system is an impressive makeup of inner working organs that are connected to one another from the mouth to the rectum. It consists of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the pancreas, the liver and the gallbladder. The GI tract itself is made up of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, and the anus.
Working all together, along with the assistance and regulation from the nervous system, the digestive system is impressively constructed to perform the task of turning food into the energy and nutrients the body needs to survive. Once the task of nutrient withdrawal is complete, the digestive system condenses the waste for disposal in the form of a bowel movement.
What does the Digestive System do?
The most important function of the digestive system is its ability to withdraw nutrients from consumed food and liquids. By going through the intricate mechanisms of each organ within the digestive system, the food we eat is broken down and processed in a way that allows for maximum absorption of usable nutrients. As described in Your Digestive System and How it Works (2008), consumed food is not in the form that the body is capable of utilizing as nourishment. Therefore, it must be broken down into smaller molecules before they can be used to nourish cells and provide energy.
These nutrients consist of proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and even water. Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream then converted into energy that the body can use for essential processes such as growth, cell repair and heat production.
How does the Digestive System function?
The digestive system consists of four main functions that take place. In “What Are the Four Main Functions of the Digestive System?” medical author, John P. Cunha, describes these four functions as:
Motility: Food moves through the digestive tract due to a process called peristalsis, which is the movement of muscles in the GI tract that move the food through the digestive system . This involves the breakdown and mixing of ingested nutrients all the way through the elimination of undigested waste from the body.
Secretion: This is the release of enzymes, hormones, and other substances that help the body digest the food that is eaten. Hormones tell the body when to produce digestive juices and signal the brain when you are hungry or full
Digestion: Ingested nutrients including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water are reduced into molecules small enough to pass through the lining of the gut and so they can enter the bloodstream . The digestive system breaks down foods we consume so the body can use them for energy, growth, and cell repair. Proteins break down to amino acids. Fats break down to fatty acids and glycerol. Carbohydrates break down to simple sugars
Absorption: The digested nutrients pass from the gut into the blood so the circulatory system or lymph system can pass them on to the rest of the body to use or store. The lymph system absorbs fatty acids and vitamins. The blood carries simple sugars, amino acids, glycerol, and some vitamins and salts to the liver. The liver stores, processes, and delivers these nutrients to the body when needed.
As you can tell, the digestive system is in charge of a very essential mechanism of the body. When the digestive system isn't performing to its maximum potential, a whole bunch of issues can take place. Therefore, it is vital that we do what we can to ensure proper digestive system functioning.
Natural Ways To Improve the Digestive System
So, now that we know what the digestive system is, what it does and how it functions- let's take a look at some natural ways to improve how this impressive system functions for our pets.
Oregano Essential Oil
Oregano essential oil is a long time hidden gem in the world of natural healing remedies. According to research performed by Zou et al. (2016), oregano essential oil is capable of aiding in the health of the intestine. Particularly in regards to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Unfortunately, leaky gut is a common epidemic amongst canines. It is caused when the inner lining of the intestines gets damaged. This can happen from the consumption of bones or other foreign objects. The internal damage can cause food particles, bacteria, viruses and other harmful microbes to enter the bloodstream.
Oregano essential oil can help strengthen the intestinal lining and also supply anti-ulcer properties. These properties help improve and maintain your dog’s gut health.
Apple Cider Vinegar
You are probably familiar with all the hype surrounding apple cider vinegar. And rightfully so! Apple cider vinegar has been around since the dawn of time and has certainly earned its spotlight.
Not only is it useful for a host of other ailments - (skin issues, ear infections, heart health)- but it is especially helpful for pets suffering from digestive issues. Apple cider vinegar contains a host of healthy enzymes that have also been shown to help reduce gas and bloating (Veterinarians.org Team, 2021.)
If your dog is suffering from constipation or diarrhea, consider adding a couple teaspoons to their drinking water once a day. Not only will it aid in their digestive health, but it will also add a refreshing flavor for you furry companion to enjoy.
Bowel Movements
If you are a pet owner, than you are no stranger to the aspect of bowel movements. As it is with humans, consistent and healthy bowel movements are vital to a well-functioning digestive system.
One way that you can ensure a healthy digestive system for your pet is to guarantee they are having frequent and normal bowl movements. And as gross as it may seem, it's good idea to periodically check the consistency and color of their feces.
You will want to keep an eye out for signs of diarrhea, constipation, bloody or abnormally colored stool, and/or foreign objects in stool.
Keeping track of their stool and bowel patterns will ensure that there aren't any digestive issues going unnoticed.
